Digital ID goes online in dry-run mode

Amman, Aug. 25 (Petra) -- The Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship on Wednesday announced that it has started piloting a personal digital ID before a prospective nationwide deployment, adding that the first phase will be limited to public servants only.

In a statement, the ministry said that the ID digitization project is already underway for its staff and will include the staff of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing on Thursday. It noted that the rollout of the digital ID will be time-framed and incremental.

The pilot phase, the ministry further explained, is intended to ensure sound and smooth rollout and finalize staff training. It indicated that the public will later on have their digital IDs activated in a one-off visit to fixed and mobile centers as well as to the offices of the Civil Status and Passports Department in the capital before the service becomes available Kingdom-wide.

The ministry also said that the digital ID will enable citizens to use a single username and password for all government services and that their e-signature will be activated for services and transactions that allow for the use of such authentication.

The move, it added, will allow the public to obtain services using "SANAD" app which is planned to serve as a one-stop shop for all e-government services.
